History

The “Railway Inn” started life as one of the Browns Cottages – No 130 Ashley Road. It was licensed as a beer house from about 1850. In 1868 No 128 also became a beer house. In its enlarged form (No 128 – 130) it was known as the “Railway Tavern”.

The present building was erected in the 1930’s. Joseph Charles Holt was the Landlord until his death in 1937. His widow, Mary Ellen Holt took over until December 1948 when she died on the premises when her nightdress caught fire by a small electric fire upstairs.

The Railway is one of a number of Robinson’s pubs that are reported to have their own resident Ghost, with the Railway being that of the late Mary Ellen Holt. Several sightings have been made of Mary, mainly on the first floor landing of the premises which as legend has it, was where Mary tried to seek her escape from the blaze.
